When you think of a mascot, you might picture a sports team or a cereal box character. But mascots are far more versatile – they can bring warmth, humor, and relatability to even the most technical digital products. Remember the iconic Clippy from Microsoft Office? Love it or hate it, that little paperclip was memorable – and that’s exactly the point.
Mascots can:
- Make a brand more human and approachable
- Serve as a storytelling tool
- Provide emotional continuity across user experiences
- Help users form a stronger connection with your product
Even major companies have embraced this idea. Duolingo’s sassy green owl regularly goes viral on social media. Monobank’s QR-cat has become a recognizable icon in Ukrainian fintech. These mascots aren’t just cute – they’re strategic.

Why We Created a Mascot for a Data Analytics Platform
Data analytics is serious business – and mobile data analytics platform is no exception. As a part of the development team I was happy to bring fresh look and better layouts to Appflow.ai. But while analyzing our personas product manager and I understood that serious doesn’t have to mean sterile. Our users are people, after all. People who might get tired, stuck, or need a little smile during their workflow.
So we asked ourselves: what if our platform had a personality?
We brainstormed a range of ideas, from an eccentric scientist to – believe it or not – a wise Jewish grandma. But we kept coming back to something more comforting and universal: a cat.
Meet Muffin, the Data Cat 🐱
Our mascot is a plump, slightly judgmental cat named Muffin. She’s lazy in the best way — a cat who truly understands efficiency. But don’t be fooled by the sleepy eyes and round belly – Muffin has a job to do.

Muffin occasionally sneaks off her main duties to find herself in unexpected situations. She might hide in a box during a seasonal promotion or get tangled up in yarn when you’re exploring a new feature.
These moments give our platform a touch of humor – making it feel more alive and personal.
Muffin isn’t just decoration – she’s part of the experience. You’ll meet her across the interface:
- Ask Muffin is an AI-powered assistant that helps users generate personalized dashboards and queries with a simple prompt.
- She appears on error screens in funny (and sometimes sarcastic) way.
- She delivers contextual pop-ups, warnings, and hints – always with her signature cat-like charm.
Muffin isn’t just a mascot – she’s a UX character. She creates continuity, softens friction points, and gives users a sense of playful confidence. In an industry that can often feel cold and technical, she adds warmth, surprise, and delight.
What We Learned
Designing Muffin wasn’t just a fun side project – it was a strategic UX decision. Here’s what we took away from the experience:
- A mascot can be a surprisingly effective design system anchor
- Humor and empathy can improve user retention and satisfaction
- Visual consistency doesn’t mean visual blandness – a mascot can make your product feel alive
In Conclusion
A well-designed mascot isn’t just decoration – it’s a UX asset. If your product has any sort of personality, values, or quirks – a mascot might be the perfect way to bring them to life.
And sometimes, the best way to explain a complex data system… is through a chonky cat named Muffin.
